A Mercurial Fairytale...

Through my survey and through other discussions I have had with people about what, for them, conjures up ideas of fairytales, what has struck me the most is that they will often first, before anything else, look straight to their gardens.

Everyone needs a little bit of magic in their lives, and for many they find this magic in their front or back gardens. It is the place where they can inject colour into their lives, where they can tell their own stories by placing statues and other decorative ornaments around, and where perhaps most importantly they can project a description of their own personality onto the world outside their front door – even if it is just by having a square of grass outside.

To give a flavour of what this means to people, I have photographed a selection of people’s front gardens in Essex. Some are more striking…
